Telescopic Language Models train one network to serve every depth

Telescopic Language Models train one nested Transformer to remain usable after any layer prefix, instead of supporting only a few fixed exits. Stochastic prefix supervision pairs one randomly truncated pass with one full-capacity pass at each step, with no inference-time architectural change. On a 200M-parameter proxy trained on 20B tokens, the paper reports a 43% to 44% lower area under the quality-budget curve than fixed-exit suites while matching full-depth quality. The linked Apache-2.0 repository currently contains documentation but no implementation.

What this means for you

For serving teams that currently maintain separate compressed models for several latency tiers, a continuously elastic checkpoint could simplify routing and deployment. Watch rather than adopt: the evidence comes from a small proxy suite, so the key unanswered question is whether the continuum survives at production scale and under quantization, batching and KV-cache constraints.

FRONTIER WATCH

Public artifacts and validated results are different.

The recorded fact is the public work and its artifacts. Author-reported outcomes do not establish independent reproduction. Next checks include usable code, task conditions and third-party validation.
