Google runs the first data-center TPU response in orbit

Google's Project Suncatcher prototype returned the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit after running Gemma 4. The team had already powered the host and TPU trays and run early machine-learning tests. The next phase will test reliability under orbital thermal stress and radiation before a planned two-satellite experiment in 2027.

What this means for you

For infrastructure planners, this proves only that inference can run in orbit, not that space compute is economical or reliable. Thermal, radiation, networking, launch and maintenance evidence still separates a moonshot from a deployable architecture.
