OpenAI confirms the national Grid Protectors program and Georgia pilot while stating that future location-specific commitments remain unfinished.
OpenAI launches Grid Protectors with an approved Georgia pilot
OpenAI launched Grid Protectors, a national program intended to make future compute campuses reduce demand during grid stress and sometimes supply on-site power or storage. The only finalized example is the approved 25-year Effingham County agreement: about 3.2 GW of planned demand, OpenAI-funded infrastructure and up to 1 GW of flexible demand response. The campus is still in development, so no operational curtailment result exists.
What this means for you
For AI infrastructure planners and host communities, this turns grid flexibility from a general pledge into a named program with one approved utility contract. Keep it on WATCH until operating data shows notice time, curtailment duration, workload impact, emissions and realized customer savings.

Georgia Power confirms the 25-year agreement, about 3.2 GW of planned demand, up to 1 GW of flexible demand response and cost allocation; the campus is not operating yet.
